There's something wonderful about coming home to a room filled with your favorite fragrance. Whether you're craving the comforting sweetness of a bakery scent, the freshness of citrus, or the cozy aroma of a Christmas tree, wax melts are a lovely way to make your space feel like home.
If you're new to wax melts, don't worry! They're surprisingly easy to use, and with a few simple tricks, you can enjoy beautiful fragrances without making a mess.
Here's our little guide to getting started!
1. Getting Started: How to Use Wax Melts
Wax melts are scented pieces of wax designed to release fragrance when gently heated in a compatible warmer. Unlike traditional candles, they don't have a wick!
Here's how to get started:
-
Choose a wax warmer. Use an electric or tea-light warmer specifically designed for wax melts, and follow its manufacturer's instructions.
-
Start with one cube. Our Orchard Grove clamshells contain six individual cubes. Start with one, or less if your warmer has a small dish.
-
Place the wax in the dish. Make sure the dish is clean, dry, and free of old wax or debris.
-
Turn on your warmer. As the wax melts, its fragrance will gradually fill your space.
-
Enjoy! Turn off your warmer whenever you leave the room or finish your fragrance session.
A little tip: You don't need to melt an entire clamshell at once! Start small and add more only if your warmer's instructions and dish capacity allow it.
2. How to Prevent Wax Spills
Let's face it: melted wax and furniture are not exactly best friends!
Fortunately, most spills can be avoided with a little preparation.
Choose a good spot. Keep your warmer on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface where it won't get bumped. Avoid narrow shelves, crowded tables, dangling cords, and places where curious pets might investigate.
Don't overfill the dish. Wax expands into a liquid pool as it melts. Leave plenty of room below the rim and never exceed your warmer's recommended capacity.
Never move a warmer with melted wax inside. Even a small tilt can cause a spill or burn. Turn it off and allow everything to cool completely before relocating it.
Consider a compatible silicone liner. Some warmers can accommodate heat-rated, manufacturer-approved silicone liners that make removing hardened wax easier. Make sure yours is designed for your specific warmer and won't interfere with safe heating.
And remember: a warmer doesn't need to be filled to the top to make a room smell wonderful!
3. The Easiest Ways to Remove Old Wax
Ready to switch from sweet vanilla to fresh citrus?
You don't need to pour hot wax anywhere or spend ages scrubbing your warmer.
Method 1: The Cool-and-Pop Method
This is our favorite low-mess approach!
-
Turn off and unplug your electric warmer.
-
Allow the wax and warmer to cool completely.
-
If your warmer has a removable dish, carefully lift it out once cool.
-
Gently loosen the hardened wax with your fingers or a non-sharp, warmer-safe tool.
-
Drop the solid wax into the trash.
Some removable dishes also release hardened wax more easily after a brief chill, but only try this if the warmer manufacturer allows it. Never place a hot dish in the refrigerator or freezer, since sudden temperature changes can crack glass or ceramic.
Method 2: The Cotton Ball Trick
If your warmer's dish doesn't release solid wax easily, cotton balls can help.
-
Turn off the warmer and unplug it if electric.
-
Allow the wax to cool until it is no longer dangerously hot but remains liquid.
-
If it is safe to reach the dish without touching hot surfaces, carefully absorb the wax with cotton balls using a suitable tool.
-
Let the wax-soaked cotton cool completely before disposing of it.
-
Wipe away any remaining residue according to your warmer's cleaning instructions.
Important: Never reach across a flame, touch hot wax, or handle a hot dish. If you're unsure, let everything cool completely and use the solid-wax removal method instead.
Method 3: A Removable Silicone Dish
If your warmer comes with a flexible, heat-rated silicone dish, cleanup can be especially convenient.
Simply allow the wax to cool and harden completely, remove the dish according to its instructions, and gently flex it to release the wax.
No scraping, no pouring, and minimal mess!
Never pour wax down the sink or toilet. It can harden inside your plumbing and cause expensive clogs.
4. Essential Wax Melt Safety Tips
A cozy home should also be a safe one!
Here are a few important rules to remember every time you use wax melts:
-
Never leave a warmer unattended. Turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
-
Keep away from children and pets. Both the warmer and melted wax can become hot enough to cause burns.
-
Never add water, essential oils, or additional fragrance oils. Wax melts are already formulated for use as sold.
-
Keep away from flammable materials. Curtains, paper, decorations, and other combustible items should be safely separated from your warmer.
-
Inspect your warmer before use. Don't use one with a damaged cord, cracked dish, or other visible damage.
-
Never use a stove, microwave, or hot plate to melt wax intended for a wax warmer.
-
Use in a well-ventilated space. If the fragrance causes irritation or discomfort, turn off the warmer and get fresh air.
-
Never eat wax melts. Their delicious fragrances may smell like desserts, but they're not food!
Always follow the safety instructions that came with your warmer. Different models have different capacities, heating systems, and cleaning requirements.
5. How Long Do Wax Melts Last?
Unlike candles, wax melts don't burn away as they release fragrance.
The wax remains in the dish while its scent gradually fades.
How long a cube smells wonderful depends on several factors, including the fragrance, warmer temperature, room size, and how long you use it.
You can turn off your warmer, let the wax harden, and enjoy the same cube during another session.
When the fragrance becomes too faint for your liking, it's time to replace the wax.
Our tip: Don't judge a melt only by how strong it smells up close. Give the fragrance a little time to spread throughout the room.
6. How to Store Your Wax Melts
Want to keep your favorite fragrances smelling their best?
A little proper storage goes a long way.
-
Keep your wax melts in their original clamshell packaging.
-
Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
-
Avoid leaving them in hot cars or near sunny windows.
-
Keep different fragrances separated to prevent scent transfer.
-
Store them securely away from children and pets.
If you're collecting seasonal scents, a small storage box or drawer can help keep everything organized until you're ready to enjoy them.
7. A Few Extra Tips for Fragrance Lovers
Start with lighter fragrances in smaller spaces. A single cube may be plenty for a bedroom or home office.
Clean your dish between different scents. Leftover wax can mix fragrances in unexpected ways. Unless you're intentionally experimenting, start with a clean dish.
Try different fragrance families. Bakery scents can make a space feel warm and comforting, while citrus and fresh fragrances can create a bright, refreshing atmosphere.
Be mindful of sensitive noses. Everyone experiences fragrance differently, including pets. Use modest amounts, provide ventilation, and make sure animals can leave the scented area.
Keep a few favorites on hand. Sometimes you want the smell of fresh fruit; other times, nothing beats a warm, delicious bakery fragrance!
